7. deep play

I'm just laying on the grass

yeah, and then you get up

What are you going to do with no weapon?

Ding, ding, ding

Okay, let's do another round

with no weapons.

I give you full health back.

Another round full health both of us.

A little house with a school bus

that rides back and forth through the town.

Right here we have the grocery store

if you can look in there.

With a pathway and a stone pool.

And if we look inside the house

with a neatly-made bed which I know is not realistic.

With the mother who is an accountant

and the father who is a

marine biologist.

In clay world, different that this world,

sometimes it's winter, sometimes it's fall

sometimes it's summer sometimes it's spring.

All of these can be happening in different places all over.

Three hundred dollars.

You get Water Works.

Water Works, Electric Company, St. Charles Place, Virginia Avenue

The kids who are involved with Lego

they practically subsume their consciousness into a little plastic thing in their hand.

They race around with a little ship that they put together

using 8 by 2 bricks

and are so involved that they're not really aware of the world

except as an aspect of their game

which is part of deep play I think

You're aware but only as much as you need to be

to not kill yourself and keep yourself

embroiled in your game.

Deep play is controlled chaos.

You have constant churning turmoil

in the fantasy-world that you're involved in

and you're so

engrossed in it

that nothing else really matters.

Learning is what happens when you're doing something else.

It's an unusual concept that many people don't understand

but really what it is is when you're so involved

in the game that you're playing or the activity that you're participating in

you sort of forget that it's a game

that it comes to life in a way that

can only happen when you do it for yourself.

It's not restrained by

barriers between ideas, barriers between

aspects of knowledge.

You aren't playing a game that involves

astrophysics, you're just playing and

the context that you're in, in the game

involves astrophysics, it involves

navigation, it involves tactical thinking

it involves straight physics, any number of things
